In 2022, the share of zero-emission taxis in rides departing from Helsinki Airport has increased from around 30 per cent to over 60 per cent by autumn.
This significant growth is the result of long-term efforts.
“Finavia contributes to the reduction of traffic emissions. Last year, we organised the competitive tendering for taxi services at the airport in a manner that encouraged service providers to acquire zero-emission cars. This also guided them to offer such vehicles, which is now reflected in the statistics,” says Jukka Isomäki, Finavia’s Head of Parking and Landside Traffic at Helsinki Airport.
From competitive tendering to concrete action
At the same time, the prioritisation rule for zero-emission taxis was defined. In practice, this means that zero-emission cars have a right of way in the terminal taxi lanes compared to higher-emission cars. This practice has been in place since January 2022.
“With this practice, the work that has been carried out since the competitive tendering continues concretely in the airport taxi lanes.”
Finavia has also increased the electric car charging capacity in Helsinki Airport’s parking garages and there are currently nearly 350 charging stations available to customers. In addition, investments have been made in solar panels mounted on the parking garage walls and electricity produced by them is used for the charging stations for electric cars.
“The general trend for electric and zero-emission cars seems to be that their share of traffic will increase. In this respect, too, Finavia is keeping up with the times,” says Isomäki.
