Restaurant Day is a food carnival when anyone can open a restaurant for a day. The event was first held in Helsinki in May 2011.

In the last three years, the event has grown from 45 home-spun restaurants in Finland to over a thousand restaurants in more than 30 countries from Aruba to Uzbekistan.

The event itself has no organiser and no specific theme. Instead, anyone can try their hand at running any kind of restaurant they like. From selling coffee and cookies in the street to creating a fine-dining experience in one’s living room, anything goes.

For the first time, Helsinki Airport opens its doors to amateur restaurateurs on 17 August. In the spirit of Restaurant Day, Helsinki Airport does not dictate what kind of restaurants can be set up during the day, as long as they do not pose a risk to passenger safety.

Restaurants can be set up both inside the airport as well as restricted areas outside the terminal buildings. We are excited to see what kind of restaurateurs will set up their stalls next Sunday!

If you’d like to set up a restaurant at the airport, read the instructions here.
