Visit Finland has awarded Ivalo Airport the Sustainable Travel Finland label. The label has also been awarded to Kittilä and Rovaniemi airports.

“The Sustainable Travel Finland label awarded to Ivalo Airport is recognition of the active work we do at Finavia to promote more sustainable travel. This year, four northern airports, including Ivalo Airport, will take a step from carbon neutrality towards net zero emissions,” says Jonna Pietilä, Finavia’s Vice President responsible for Lapland airports.

Finavia’s goal is to reduce the carbon emissions of all its airports to net zero by the end of 2025. This year, that level will be reached at Ivalo, Kittilä, Rovaniemi and Kuusamo airports.

“We have switched to using renewable motor fuel oil in our airport machinery, and we use renewable diesel in our vehicles. We use fully renewable bioenergy in our heating plants and use renewable fuel oil as a backup fuel. The district heating delivered to the airports is also based on biofuels. With these, we are proud to take the next step from carbon neutrality towards net zero.”

Promoting sustainable travel is a common goal for the entire Lapland region and the region’s travel industry operators.

“As an airport company, we want to do our part in working towards this goal,” Jonna Pietilä says.
