Rovaniemi, Ivalo and Kittilä airports are located near popular holiday resorts in Lapland.
“In the autumn, tourists head to popular autumn foliage destinations – such as Ylläs, Saariselkä, Levi and Inari – via the Ivalo and Kittilä airports. Rovaniemi Airport, on the other hand, is often used when you want to hike in the Pyhä-Luosto area,” says Jonna Pietilä, Finavia’s VP Lapland Airports.
Helsinki Airport offers daily direct flights to Ivalo, Kittilä and Rovaniemi airports. There are also direct flights to Kuusamo Airport during the autumn and winter seasons.
“The best time to admire the autumn colours of Lapland is in September, because when the autumn holidays start in October, we will already be preparing for the first snow of the winter,” Pietilä says.
Camping gear goes in checked baggage
If you are travelling to Lapland and have special baggage with you, please read Finavia’s packing instructions in advance. For camping, hiking and hunting gear, it’s a good idea to check whether they should be put in hand baggage or checked baggage.
Your airline will also give you further instructions on travelling with special luggage.
Lapland delicacies at airports
The shops at Ivalo and Kittilä Airport, for example, offer delicious local food and beverages to take on your trip or to take home.
“The selection includes cloudberry marmalade, ground lingonberry and bilberry, cloudberry and bilberry tea and various kinds of canned reindeer meat. You can also buy Kupilka’s Finnish outdoor dishware for your home or to give as a gift,” Pietilä says.
