Finavia’s plan for a major investment in air traffic areas at Tampere-Pirkkala Airport will take place in summer 2018. The aim is to carry out both expansions and renovations.

Finavia will expand the apron of the airport to meet the needs of a growing and diverse air traffic. At the same time, the runway, taxiway and apron will be repaved. Finavia is also planning to improve the lighting system and reduce the environmental load of the airport. A new taxiway will be added to the runway in front of the Pilot Training centre and new wide turning areas for aircraft will be built at the ends of the runway.

The total cost of the investment in development will be EUR 15 million in total. More detailed planning of the work is continuing, and preliminary work can be started already this winter.

“The decision to invest in development is great news for the whole Pirkanmaa area, its inhabitants and its business life. These investments will help us to secure the fluency of air traffic and give good conditions for growth. The volume of operations at Tampere airport is growing, not only due to the new Pilot Training centre, but because of versatile passenger traffic. From Tampere airport, you can travel all over the world via three hubs - Helsinki, Arlanda and Riga airports”, says Mari Nurminen of Finavia, Director of Tampere airport.

The renovation of the air traffic area will be completed in stages. During the first stage, the shorter runway can be used for take-offs and landings, and air traffic will be possible even during the renovations.

During the second stage, during slower periods (17 July – 12 August 2018), the airport will be fully closed from air traffic. Passengers should contact their airline if they have booked tickets for the above mentioned period. During the closing time, it will be possible to use the versatile flight connections of Helsinki airport, for example. Air traffic will restart at Tampere airport again after the closure.

Finavia will give more details on the investment progress later in the spring.

In recent years, Finavia has invested roughly EUR 7.5 million in the development of Tampere-Pirkkala Airport. Previously, Finavia modernised public areas and services in terminals and carried out a significant environmental improvement project.
