The plan is to expand the current terminal by 80,000 square metres. It is possible that two extensions will be built: one towards the south and another towards the west.
Both extensions would become expansions of the current long-haul section at Terminal 2.
In addition to passenger areas, a project to increase the number of aircraft stands by approximately ten has commenced. Most of these stands would be for wide-bodied aircraft.
The aim is to finish the draft phase, which has just begun, by the end of 2015. According to the current estimate, the expansion work will commence in 2016.
Development of the passenger experience, environmental considerations and energy efficiency are significant factors steering the design of the extensions.
Finavia will study the possibilities of producing renewable energy at the airport and utilise the data obtained from the TravelLab project in 2014 in the design.
Five Finnish companies have been selected for the planning project's draft phase
Approximately 30 designers, consultants and experts are participating in the draft phase. All the partner companies are Finnish and were selected on the basis of tenders.
- The consultancy group TYL Sipti-Pohjatekniikka is drafting the airport's geotechnics, which includes base structure planning and contamination studies.
- Sito, a design company specialising in infrastructure, traffic solutions and land use, has been chosen to design the stands for the wide-bodied aircraft.
- The building engineering specialists Granlund will design the HVAC and automation, electricity and sprinkler systems, and provide consultancy on environmental and energy-efficiency matters.
- The internationally renowned and award-winning architectural agency PES-architects is responsible for designing the terminal building.
- Sweco Rakennetekniikka Oy will be responsible for the structural engineering.
