Finavia will commence a renovation project of the air traffic areas at Kittilä Airport in August. The airport will be closed during the runway renovation. Air traffic to Kittilä will resume on 31 August.

The runway, the taxiways and the apron of Kittilä Airport will be resurfaced. At the same time, the safety areas at the ends of the runway will be renovated and the sewer system of the airport repaired. More parking space will be built in the landside. The value of the investment totals more than EUR 3 million.

Air passengers are provided with a daily, free bus transportation between Kittilä and Rovaniemi while Kittilä Airport is closed during the renovation on 4–30 August 2015. The bus operates the route once a day in each direction.

Prepared for traffic growth

Finavia is determined to continue to invest in the airports in Lapland since air traffic volumes are expected to grow in future especially thanks to the outlook for tourism. Last year, Kittilä Airport experienced a transformation inside the terminal when the services were reformed and the interior was made more comfortable.

“With the renovation, we want to ensure that air traffic is smooth and, for our part, provide good preconditions for the growth of air traffic in Lapland. In addition to Finavia, the economic regions and local travel agents play a significant role in promoting tourism. The introduction of a new route for the next winter season is a good example of this, as Lufthansa starts flights between Kittilä and Munich,” says Martti Oinas, Finavia's regional manager in Lapland.

Finavia has implemented an extensive and ongoing investment programme for its airport network for the period 2013–2015. In 2015, approximately EUR 25 million will be invested in network airports, and the estimated employment effect of the investments is 350 person-years. The entire investment programme will bring almost 1,700 person-years' worth of work to the areas surrounding the key regional airports.
