Finavia is beginning expansion work on the P5 parking garage. The value of the investment is about EUR 40 million.

The airport's infrastructure will be developed massively in the next few years, as Helsinki Airport prepares to serve 20 million passengers annually. The more the passenger volumes grow, the more parking spaces are needed.

- By expanding P5 we ensure a smooth departure for passengers, even during the period when the terminal expansion work is still ongoing but passenger volumes have increased, says Finavia's Airport Director Ville Haapasaari.

After the expansion is ready, P5 will have 3,000 new parking spaces. Two new storeys will be added to the existing building and a new annex will be built next to the parking garage.

Finavia's Technical Director Henri Hansson says that the total value of the investment is approximately EUR 40 million. The job impact of the contract made with SRV Rakennus Oy is approximately 350 man-years.

The two-year project begins in late October with preparation of the site. In November, construction, excavation and blasting work will commence. The work is expected to be complete in summer 2016.

- We have extensive expertise in constructing commercial properties. For example, we built the P5 parking garage at Helsinki Airport that was completed in 2001, says SRV's Production Director Kimmo Kurki.

Finavia's website offers information about parking and changes

The P5 parking garage will remain in use during the construction work. However, there will be fewer parking spaces than usual because some floors of the P5 parking garage will be closed during the work.

Finavia has a total of 10,000 parking spaces in the vicinity of Helsinki Airport in three parking garages and two outdoor areas.

Passengers can check the available spaces or reserve a space in advance on Finavia's website. The website also provides information about route changes.

Finavia's investment programme improves Helsinki Airport's competitiveness

The expansion of P5 is just one part of Finavia's €1 billion development programme which aims to strengthen Helsinki Airport's position as one Europe's leading transit airports.

The investment programme is estimated to provide about 14,000 man-years of work and about 5,000 new permanent jobs in the airport area.

At the same time, Finavia is implementing a wide-ranging service reform at Helsinki Airport which will bring 70 new or revamped shops and restaurants to the airport.
