The airport serves passengers travelling to Jyväskylä, a busy university city, and its surrounding region in Central Finland. Jyväskylä Airport has a long history in military aviation and even today, the nearby Airforce Academy in Tikkakoski makes up a significant part of the airport's traffic.

1945: First commercial flight from Jyväskylä airport.
1946: A regular route to Jyväskylä is opened.
1960: The first terminal building is completed.
1988: The new passenger terminal is completed.
2004: The airport's passenger terminal is renovated and expanded.
