Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many restaurants and services have had to adjust their businesses and create new ways to serve their customers. At Helsinki Airport, FineFoods stores wanted to create a solution to prevent food waste, and decided to start selling products waiting in their warehouse to customers via Matsmart online shop.

Customers can consume products online regardless of their whereabouts. By selling products online, FineFood stores are able to provide popular sweets and products to their customers outside the airport, and by doing so, lessen the amount of food waste being formed, as the amount of passengers at the airports has temporarily dropped.

Matsmart online shop arrived in Finland in 2017, and has since sold customers products, that would otherwise end up as food waste due to seasonal fluctuation, overproduction, changes in packaging, or expired best-before-dates.

"We are happy to see the businesses operating at Helsinki Airport innovating new ways to serve passengers and participating in building an ethically responsible airport. Responsibility at the airport is composed of many small actions, that form thea sum of good things," says Nora Immonen, Director of Commercial services at Helsinki Airport.

As air traffic slowly starts up again, businesses at Finavia’s airports are excitedly waiting for encounters with passengers once again. Some of the services and restaurants at Helsinki Airport have remained open throughout this exceptional springtime, and many more will open their doors during summer. The will to serve customers once again is as strong as ever.
