Finavia is a partner in a pilot conducted by SITA, which develops air transport information technology services. The pilot looks into the opportunities offered by mixed reality (MR) in airports. SITA today announced the cooperation scheme at the annual Air Transport IT Summit arranged in Brussels.
When looking at mixed reality, it is possible to see both the physical and the digital world and interact with both of them. The new technology could be utilised in airports in anticipating passenger flows, for instance.
In practice, utilising the technology could mean using smart glasses, for example, so that it would be possible to watch data displays and see a live hologram airport model simultaneously.
According to a longer term vision, the intention is to make all information on airport operations visible in the same place.
Eero Knuutila, who is responsible for service development at Finavia, says that Finavia wants to be actively involved in exploring the opportunities of new innovations.
- In many fields mixed reality has proved to be a useful tool for data visualisation and processing. We are really enthusiastic about being involved in investigating opportunities to use the new technology, Knuutila says.
The development work has just begun, and work on investigating the opportunities of mixed reality continues actively.
