New passenger facilities will be built between the terminal and Hotel Hilton and connected to the non-Schengen gate area. The new bus gate area will mainly serve passengers departing outside Europe.
To be completed in summer 2016, the facilities will offer additional capacity for 1,000 departing passengers and 12 apron buses. The size of the new building will be 3,000 m2.
The new bus gate area ensures that there is sufficient capacity during the expansion of the terminal. In addition, different phases of the development programme can proceed according to schedule.
In addition to the expansion of passenger facilities, Finavia will also invest in new buses. We will acquire 11 apron buses, some of which increase capacity and some replace current buses.
Construction work will be performed while causing as little disturbance as possible to other airport functions. The construction work is not estimated to have any impact on passenger services.
The main architect is PES-arkkitehdit and Lemminkäinen will act as the contractor.
The construction of the bus gate area comprises part of the second phase of Finavia's development programme to expand the non-Schengen area at Helsinki Airport. The construction of the terminal expansion will be started at the beginning of 2016 and will be completed in 2020.
Towards the year 2020
The objective of Finavia's development programme of EUR 900 million is to strengthen the position of Helsinki Airport among international airports and as an important hub between Europe and Asia.
Having an internationally competitive airport is vital considering the whole of Finland, and it maintains good flight connections from Finland to different parts of the world.
The airport expansion will make it possible to serve 20 million passengers in 2020.
