Update 17. Jan 8 a.m. The morning traffic has started well and the accuracy has been almost at normal level. Snowfall is predicted to end sooner than expected but there is still a risk of freezing drizzle that could affect traffic.
For safety reasons and due to strong wind, bad runway conditions or low visibility the amount of landings and take-offs may have to be limited by ANS Finland. Limitations would decrease capacity and thus cause delays for arrivals and departures.
At the moment forecasts show freezing drizzle for Thursday afternoon. In that case airplane engines must be defrosted between flights. That would delay air traffic significantly. The de-icing operations would also be busy, since ice removal must be done in two stages.
“In spite of the windy and snowy weather conditions we will do our best to keep the runways open and operations running as smoothly as possible. Finavia’s maintenance is fully prepared and ready to keep the runways clear of snow.” says Heini Noronen-Juhola, Vice President, Finavia.
