The flights will be operated with Airbus A320/A319 aircraft once a week on Saturdays between December and March. The first flight between Kittilä and Munich will be flown on 19 December. The flight time on the route is about 3.5 hours.
Getting a new weekly route connection to Lapland has been a joint effort by Finavia, Visit Finland and the travel operators in Levi, Ylläs and Muonio areas.
“Lufthansa's new route next winter is tremendously good news not only for us here at Finavia, but also for the tourism industry in Lapland. Introducing this new route is a good example of how big a difference it makes when regional tourism operators are committed to the development of air traffic,” says Finavia Corporation's director Joni Sundelin.
Munich Airport is a significant hub for air traffic in Central Europe, with connecting flights to about 30 destinations. When considering also the connections of Helsinki Airport, the reachability of Kittilä will be in a league of its own in winter 2015–2016.
