The capacity of the terminal is being expanded to accommodate the growing freight capacity that will be provided by Finnair's Airbus A350 XWB fleet. It includes specific freight processing areas for pharmaceuticals and life science products, as well as perishable products, such as fish and shellfish.
Based on state-of-the-art technology, the warehouse facilities of the freight terminal will be extensively automated in order to ensure efficient, high-quality and cost-effective freight processing. The location of the new terminal is optimal for land transport from the freight terminal to the departure gates for wide-body aircraft at Helsinki Airport.
The terminal will be introduced in spring 2017 near Finnair's technical area on Turbiinitie near the Central Uusimaa Emergency Services Unit.
Finnair's freight operations will continue to be based at Rahtitie 1 until the relocation to the new freight terminal in spring 2017.
The new freight terminal is Finnair's second largest investment so far, after the A350 XWB fleet investment. The ownership structure of the new freight terminal will be decided once it is ready.
"Freight is a major source of income for Finnair, as an average of over 17% of long-distance traffic income comes from freight. More than 70% of freight carried by Finnair Cargo is transit freight, and the new Airbus A350 XWB aircraft will increase our freight capacity by about 50% until 2020.
