The expansion of Terminal 2, the installation of a new baggage carousel and renovation of interior wall surfaces have progressed well. Passenger comfort will be ensured even during the renovation.
– Most of the feedback about the renovation has been positive. Overall, our customers have been satisfied with the solutions we have produced during the renovation of the airport, says Finavia's Service Manager at Tampere-Pirkkala Airport, Teemu Soininen.
The renovation is being jointly funded by Finavia, the state and the municipalities of the Tampere region. Other airport actors such as the authorities and ground forwarding companies have also participated in the planning. The renovation is being carried out by Finavia.
More than a facelift
Terminal 2 has been in use since 1979, so a renovation is in order. T2 will continue to be the low-cost terminal in the future.
Finavia is aiming to improve the smoothness and comfort of air travel with the renovation. The 210 m2 expansion will provide space and improve the comfort of passengers and employees.
The greatest and most visible change will be the construction of the new luggage lounge.
All the terminal's surfaces will be renovated and the interior design will have a fresh new look. The interior decorations include photos of Tampere, highlighting the city as an interesting travel destination. There will also be some structural changes: walls will be moved and technology updated.
Ten professionals are working on the site. They will ensure that the project stays on schedule.
Investing in environmental matters
In addition to the renovation of the terminal, a storage area for snow containing glycol is also being built at Tampere-Pirkkala Airport.
‘We will improve the methods and efficiency of the recovery of the propylene glycol we use for de-icing. The snow storage area will be completed by mid-October’, says Airport Manager Mari Nurminen.
The cost of the renovation is approximately EUR 5 million. This year, Finavia's total investment in network airports in Finland is approximately EUR 35 million.
Tampere-Pirkkala is the third-busiest airport in Finland. In addition to passenger traffic, the airport’s customers include the governmental and military aviation of the Finnish State as well as general aviation and aviation schools. The smooth operation of the airport depends on cooperation between aviation professionals.
Terminal 1 is used by traditional network carriers and charter flights, and Terminal 2 is used by low-cost airlines, such as Ryanair. Currently, Ryanair operates flights to eight destinations from Tampere-Pirkkala, including London, Barcelona, Bremen, Budapest and Milan.
