Celebrated annually on 7 December, International Civil Aviation Day is a reminder of the importance of air travel and its social and economic benefits for the modern world, society and people.
Aviation has changed travel and business permanently and contributed to building connections between people for decades.
International Civil Aviation Day is an excellent time to celebrate past achievements as well as look to the future: we want to make air travel possible for Finns even a hundred years from now. Aviation industry operators are committed to reducing emissions and playing an active role in curbing climate change. Finavia's goal is to reduce its own emissions to as close to zero as possible at all 20 of its airports and achieve net zero emissions.
Big anniversaries in Kittilä and Turku in 2025
In 2024, Finavia has been celebrating the 50th anniversary of Savonlinna Airport. You can read more about the history of Savonlinna Airport here: Savonlinna Airport celebrates its 50th anniversary. The anniversary year now culminates in flying the flag for the International Civil Aviation Day on 7 December.
In 2025, Finavia will celebrate the anniversaries of Kittilä Airport and Turku Airport. Kittilä Airport is having its 50th anniversary and Turku Airport its 70th anniversary.
The Turku region plays a significant role in Finnish aviation history. The current Turku Airport was completed in 1955. The history of aviation in Turku began with the predecessors of the current airport: in 1935, Finland's first civil airport on land was opened in Artukainen, and seaplane operations began in Ruissalo as early as 1925.
Kittilä Airport was completed in 1975, and Finavia will celebrate the airport's 50th anniversary next year.
